2011 International Pure Bhakti Yoga Prison Program – Report

Posted on September 18, 2011 by admin-vasanti

Vasudeva Krsna appeared in prison. After great suffering by Devaki and Vasudeva, He appeared in his four-armed form, to ease the suffering of the misguided jivas and to give them the highest path of love to direct them back home, back to Godhead. So the prison preaching program was inaugurated 5000 years ago by Lord Vasudeva Krsna Himself, in His kindness to the downtrodden jiva’s of this world.

5000 years later:
The International Pure Bhakti Yoga Society Prison Program began in 2010 to freely distribute the transcendental writings of Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja to those individuals who do not have easy access to his

The prison program has developed a lot over this past year, and we are very enthused to give you an update on it.

Gopika dasi and Lalita dasi from the Bay Area have started publishing a newsletter for inmates. It contains a personal letter and a print-out of one lecture of Srila Gurudevaai??i??s, which they send every month.

Recently, Mahabuddhi prabhu, who has extensive Ai??experience with prison programs, has been offering his guidance and assistance. He has made contact with the Florida Prison System of fifty prisons, and they have requested books for all of their libraries. We have therefore sent each prison a selection of Srila Gurudevaai??i??s books (Jaiva Dharma, Secret Truths of the Bhagavatam, Essence of Bhagavad Gita, Gopi Gita, Journey of the Soul, and Pinnacle of Devotion).

We also received a letter from the psychologist in the Maryland prison system who saw a description of our society in the Colorado ai???Books Through Barsai??? program. She asked how the inmates in Maryland could also take advantage of our program and receive our literature. After sending her our address, she replied, “Thank you very much for your reply. I have given this address out already, and you have made quite a few people smile today. As far as the donation to the prison library, I have passed this information along to the librarian. Thank you for your time and consideration.”Ai?? Katalin Gardner, MS Psychology Associate, CMHC-J

The response has been very positive and heart-warming. The prisoners expression of appreciation upon receiving these books and their correspondence with us is so genuine and so moving that it speaks louder than anything we can describe. Below are some excerpts from their letters.

This is a blooming project full of opportunity for anyone who wants to help. We started with just a few prisoners, and now we have over thirty contacts who are eagerly awaiting correspondence and more information about Bhakti Yoga. You can contribute by becoming a pen-pal, by sending out newsletters, or by making a donation http://gvpbookdistribution.com/get-involved/sponsor-books/.

All glories to your service, Gopika and Lalita dd! Its inspiring to see how your efforts are making a difference for souls in the prison of this material world.

Prithivite ache yata nagaradi gram, Sarvatra pracara, haibe more nama. “All over the earth, in every town and village, my Name should be preached” -Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and our loving Sri Rupanuga guru varga are so pleased when we act to free the souls imprisoned within the prison by offering the nectarean opportunity to connect with Krsna.

    mac-citta mad-gata-prana, bodhayantah parasparam
kathayantas ca mam nityam, tusyanti ca ramanti ca

“The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.” -Bhagavan Sri Krsna, Bhagavad Gita 10.9

The above verse might seem kind of high for this subject about helping prison inmates who’ve made choices that put them behind bars in lower than normal association. But the metaphor of imprisonment applies to anyone who finds themselves stuck with an un-purified mind in the material world by varying degrees, and the remedy for all of us is thus clearly the association of pure devotees.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful service with us all! Imagine how pleasing it is to sri guru & Krsna that you are reaching out to some of the most otherwise hopeless souls.

    Your servant,
    Kilimba dd

No walls (or bars) in this world can stop the mercy of Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Gopika dasi, I am very proud of you and your God-Sister Lalita diti, for this “most vital service” of distributing these books to hundreds of thousands of spirit souls, who are incarcerated. This is some of the most exciting news, that I have heard in our preaching mission! This is the way, to start a “grass-roots” Revolution! This is exactly what Sri Krishna Caitanya wanted. Caitanya Bhagavat last page ends with the quote that this Sankirtan Movement will spread to every “nook and cranny” of this world. This is what He meant. ..and you are doing it…bravo!!! I can rest in peace knowing, that the years, that I spent, in “prison ministry”, has such a strong follow-up. Gurudeva must be very pleased. All Glories to your wonderful service and all Love.
