Bhubaneswar centre preaching Report from the Jaya Sri Damodar Gaudiya Matha, Puri

January – February 2015

A joyous mood of festivity and devotion pervaded the atmosphere in the beginning two months of this year at the Jaya Sri Damodara Gaudiya Matha. We were very fortunate to have the privilege to host and serve so many dear and respected Vaisnavas (of 150 or more!) who had all gathered together from all parts of the world to attend the Pure Bhakti Academy and/or to get association of His Grace Śrīmad Bhakti-Vijñāna Bharatī Mahārāja and other very wonderful and senior Vaiṣṇavas who had coming during that time. This was all during a time when there were so many auspicious festival days such as Vyasa-puja days of Śrīla Gurudeva, Śrīla Paramgurudeva and Śrīla Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada as well as the appearance days of Advaita Acarya, Nityananda Prabhu, Narottama dasa Thakura and so on. You can imagine how much kirtana and harikatha went on these days. Gurudeva’s and Paramgurudeva’s Vyasa-puja days were celebrated in an especially grand and wonderful manner. Hundreds of devotees attended these festivals including the many devotees from all the thirteen Gaudiya Mathas here in Puri and other devotees from all over Orissa.

In the midst of all the busyness of the programs and festivities some amazing preaching opportunities arose which we immediately jumped on. At two prestigious universities in Bhubaneswar we organized six day seminars which introduce the students into the teachings of Bhagavad-gīta and Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism. The first seminar was held at GITA (Gandhi Institute of Technological Advancement) the other was held GIFT (Gandhi Institute for Technology). And third at BEC (Bhubaneswar enginerring college) About 300 students attended each seminar. On the last day of the first seminar Śrīmatī Śyāmārāṇī dīdī came and spoke to all the students who had attended and on the last day of the second seminar Śrīpad Bhaktivedānta Mādhava Mahārāja and Śrīpad Bhaktivedānta Janārdana Mahārāja came and spoke to the students. On the second seminar we had a massive kīrtan in which we wildly danced all around the campus together with about 400 students.

Overall both the seminars turned out to be very successful. There were even reports about them published in the newspapers of Orissa. Now there are about thirty students who are very genuinely interested in bhakti and many of them have started chanting. They began a regular Sunday program in which do kirtan and read and discuss Śrīla Gurudeva’s books and sometimes we give a class through the phone which they hook up to a loud speaker.

Right now as we are writing this there is another six day seminar going on at Gandhi institute of pharmaceutical And after this is finished we will be doing a seminar at Royal college of science and technology.

Seeing the overwhelming response from this type of college preaching we have now decided to open a preaching centre in Bhubaneswar. This will allow us to personally interact and guide them gradually, step-by-step in practicing and understanding the teachings of our Śrīla Gurudeva and guru-varga.

We will also be able to more easily do seminars in other colleges and universities (there are about sixty colleges and universities here!) and also do nagar-sankīrtan, book distribution, house programs etc.. We have already arranged to advertise this every Sunday on our daily TV program.

I should probably mention something about that. We have two daily TV show programs: the first one, in which Vamsi-vadan Prabhu speaks from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, is from 8 to 9:30 AM and 5 to 5:30 PM on MBC TV. I think this TV program deserves in own article so that’s all I will mention for now.

An apartment has been rented for 1 year. This consists of a large hall for katha and kirtana and another 5 rooms that can host about 15 to 20 brahmacaris. Over time we are hoping to secure another flat that will allow lady devotees to reside to do preaching.

The rent for this is 25000 rupees plus water&electricity charges.

We also need financial help from devotees to run this centre.

Donations can be given by paypal to ipbysoutreach@gmail.com (a non-profit in America that works in conjunction with the Prison Program and GVP Sponsorship)

We are very excited about having a preaching centre in Bhubaneswar and the potential it has. Due to Lord Jagannath being the presiding deity of Orissa, many people in Orissa have strong samskaras, impressions, in worshipping Him and are spiritually inclined. If we are able to present the teachings of our acaryas many people will take up the exclusive worship of Sri Krsna giving up any misconceptions.

We are very excited about the preaching prospects in Bhubaneswar. We hope that all the devotees will encourage and bless us so that we can continue.

Jay Śrīla Gurudeva! Jay Śrīla Prabhupada! Jay Jay Śrī Rādhe!

Aspiring servants,

— The devotees at Jaya Śrī Dāmodara Gauḍīya Maṭha
